The ranking is different in every market.

Accounting is irreducibly local. Chart of accounts, tax regimes, e-invoicing mandates, and banking rails change who wins.

United States

The United States is the largest and most competitive market for agentic accounting, with a clear split between incumbents (QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, Sage Intacct) and a new generation of AI-native ledgers (Puzzle, Digits, Rillet, Pilot) that have raised meaningful venture rounds since 2023. The regulatory environment rewards speed: GAAP is principles-based, most SMBs file federal 1065/1120/1120-S, and state-by-state sales tax nexus is the one place where local fit matters most.

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is Xero's home ground, Sage's headquarters country, and the only major market in Europe where cloud SMB accounting adoption crossed the early-majority line more than a decade ago. The competitive shape is a three-way split between Xero, Sage, and Intuit QuickBooks in the core SMB segment, with FreeAgent serving the NatWest-bundled sole-trader tail and Silverfin, Dext, and IRIS owning the accountant-workflow layer. Local fit in the UK is dominated by two structural facts — Making Tax Digital (MTD), now live for ITSA as of 6 April 2026, and a confirmed April 2029 mandate for B2B and B2G e-invoicing. An agentic tool that can't file MTD-compliant VAT or MTD-ITSA, and can't issue Peppol-aligned e-invoices, is not a serious option through the rest of the decade.

Germany

Germany is the largest economy in the European Union and structurally the hardest market in Europe for a foreign agentic accounting tool to enter on its own. Three facts set the shape: DATEV — a cooperative owned by tax advisors, with tens of thousands of Steuerberater members — is the standard interface between a German SMB and its external accountant; the SKR03 and SKR04 charts of accounts, both published by DATEV, are near-universal; and the phased B2B e-invoicing mandate under the Wachstumschancengesetz requires every German business to be able to *receive* structured e-invoices from 1 January 2025, with issuing obligations phasing in for companies above €800k turnover from 1 January 2027 and for all businesses from 1 January 2028. The cloud cohort — sevDesk, Lexware Office, Buchhaltungsbutler, Candis — is where agentic features are shipping fastest, but none of them can route around DATEV.

Sweden

Sweden is a concentrated market with two dominant incumbents — Fortnox (600,000+ SMBs) and Visma — that together handle most of the country's SMB accounting workloads. The Swedish market has distinct structural requirements that global agentic tools rarely satisfy out of the box: the BAS chart of accounts, the SIE file format for auditor handoff, moms (Swedish VAT) at 25% with reduced rates, Skatteverket's digital filing requirements, and — new as of 1 April 2026 — Skatteverket's statutory authority to inspect digital bookkeeping directly in live cloud systems rather than only via exported files. That last point is a quiet but material shift in what "agentic" means in Sweden: agents have to operate in systems that can be audited live. Agentic tools that succeed here tend to be either native Swedish players or AI layers (like Zimply) that sit on top of Fortnox / Visma.

Tools the firm buys, not the business.

Practice management, tax engines, working papers, AI research. The software a practice actually runs on — sliced out from buyer-side ledgers and ranked country-by-country.

05Manifesto

Agentic accounting is real. Most of the marketing is not.

Sixty-three percent of finance organizations reported deploying AI in 2026. Pilot shipped the first "fully autonomous AI Accountant." Digits won Accounting Today's 2026 Top New Product award. Fortnox's AI assistant reached 500,000 Swedish businesses.

Every one of those claims is partly true. None of them are evenly distributed across markets. The job of this index is to separate the substantive from the situational — tool by tool, country by country, with every number traceable to a public signal we can cite.
