Blue J is the most serious commercial application of generative AI to US tax research. CPA.com made Blue J its preferred tax-research partner in January 2025, a meaningful endorsement from the AICPA's commercial arm, and in the same window Blue J closed a $122M USD Series D with Intrepid Growth Partners and continued participation from Ten Coves Capital and CPA.com. Usage disclosures put the platform past 1,000 firms and past 100,000 research queries in a single month by late 2024. Blue J's positioning against TaxGPT and HiveTax is authority-first: the product is designed to cite primary sources (IRC, Treasury Regs, case law, rulings) and to explicitly decline questions where authority is thin.
What it does not do is file returns, drive workflow, or touch a client's ledger. Blue J is a research co-pilot used by tax advisors, M&A tax teams, and large-firm tax knowledge-management groups. The accuracy signal is strong but bounded by the quality of the underlying authority set and by the user's ability to verify; the company's consistent editorial line is "trust, but verify."
Relevance outside the US is genuine but secondary — Blue J has a Canadian heritage (founded 2015, University of Toronto roots) and is expanding coverage of UK and international tax, which is why it carries moderate UK local-fit. It is not positioned for Germany or Sweden and has no material footprint in those markets.
