03Research

sevDesk is the most visible of the cloud-native German SMB ledgers. Built in Offenburg and — as of February 2025 — part of Cegid, the French cloud ERP and HR leader, the product targets freelancers, solo entrepreneurs, and small businesses with a combination of invoicing, bookkeeping, and DATEV-export capability. Co-founder Marco Reinbold now runs Cegid's DACH region, which signals that sevDesk is the vehicle for Cegid's German and Austrian expansion rather than a passive portfolio asset.

Feature velocity has been high since 2023: automatic receipt categorisation against SKR03 / SKR04, GoBD-compliant archiving, XRechnung and ZUGFeRD 2.x generation, native handling of the 2025 e-invoicing receiving mandate, and ELSTER-integrated VAT filing. Autonomy at sevDesk is meaningfully higher than at DATEV for the SMB segment — most routine transactions are auto-booked and outgoing invoices are generated as structured e-invoices without user action — but the product is deliberately not pitched as a Steuerberater replacement.

For a German solo or small business that wants a cloud ledger with modern UX, sevDesk is the default first choice. Past roughly twenty staff, the conversation shifts toward Lexware Office, Dynamics 365 BC, or Sage.
